What is Qi Wireless Charging?

Qi (pronounced "chee") wireless charging is a method of charging electronic devices, like smartphones and other gadgets, without needing to plug them in with a cable. It allows devices to be charged by simply placing them on a compatible charging pad, mat, or stand, which transfers power wirelessly through electromagnetic fields.

Qi wireless charging is widely used and supported by many smartphone manufacturers and other electronics companies. It offers convenience as users don't need to deal with plugging and unplugging charging cables. Qi chargers are available in various forms, including wireless charging pads, stands, and even integrated into furniture or vehicles.

How does Qi wireless charging work?

Wireless charging uses simple inductive charging, which is explained in three simple steps below:

  1. Electrical current passes through coils within the wireless charging pad, creating an electromagnetic field.
  2. When the receiving magnetic plate within the mobile phone comes into close range with the transmitter (charging pad), the magnetic field generates an electrical current within the mobile phone.
  3. The electrical current converts into direct current (DC), which charges the mobile phone.

Which wireless charger should I buy?

We believe the most important factors that you should consider when buying a wireless charger are:

  • Charging Speed
  • Design
  • Functionality
  • Safety

Not all wireless chargers are the same, and the type of charger you need may well depend on the power requirements of your smartphone so it's always best to consult your phone manufacturer to ensure you have the correct charger.

Is Qi wireless charging the same as MagSafe?

Qi wireless charging and MagSafe are related, but not exactly the same.

Qi Wireless Charging

Qi wireless charging is a standard for wirelessly charging electronic devices using electromagnetic induction, as explained earlier. It's a technology that allows devices to charge by placing them on a compatible charging pad or surface. Many smartphones, smartwatches, and other gadgets support Qi wireless charging. It's a general standard that's widely adopted in the industry.

MagSafe

MagSafe is a proprietary technology developed by Apple, specifically for their products. It was first introduced for MacBook laptops, where the MagSafe connector used magnets to attach the charging cable to the laptop. However, in recent years, Apple introduced a new generation of MagSafe technology for iPhones (starting with the iPhone 12).

MagSafe for iPhones includes a ring of magnets around the wireless charging coil. This allows for precise alignment when placing the iPhone on a MagSafe charger. It can also attach other accessories like magnetic cases, wallets, and more, enhancing the overall user experience. MagSafe is built "on top" of the Qi wireless charging standard but adds extra features.
